How pattern AI can improve your telematics product

Pattern AI is a unique form of artificial intelligence (AI) capable of taking telematics solutions to new heights. This is because, by identifying patterns in a similar way to facial recognition, pattern AI can rapidly determine driver crash probability and climate impact. In this blog post, I’ll explain how it works and how it can improve your telematics product.

What is pattern AI?

As its name suggests, pattern AI identifies patterns in driving behavior. The AI analyzes per-second GPS driving data to create a DriverDNA for every trip, which is compared against a database of over 7 billion patterns from real-world trips.

While a person is driving, the AI compares their behavior against the database, to determine if the pattern has been seen before. It’s a similar process to facial recognition, but instead of comparing data to known faces, the AI compares it to a database of vehicle trips, and their outcomes.

What insights can pattern AI uncover?

Pattern AI adds an additional layer to the insights gleaned through telematics data. Using only existing GPS driving data, pattern AI calculates a driver’s crash probability and climate impact.

This means that, in addition to (or in place of) an events-based score, you can provide your customers with a crash probability score so they can easily see which drivers are most likely to be involved in a crash, and why. Likewise, they can see the drivers least likely to be involved in a crash.

From an environmental perspective, pattern AI enables you to incorporate a sustainability angle into your solution. In fact, it means you can provide detailed insights such as drivers with highest-lowest climate impact, emissions avoided and emissions in grams.

Why are new data insights important?

Since telematics is based on data, it makes sense that the more comprehensive the data can be, the more competitive your company can become. Pattern AI enables you to:

  • Provide your customers with deeper risk insights
  • Specify the type of risk your customers have, and how to action it
  • Support your customers with emissions management/ decarbonization
  • Create new products

Data-driven insights that help your customers quantify, act and report on their activities from a safety and sustainability perspective are particularly important today as more Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) regulations come into effect.

How does pattern AI work with existing products?

It’s important to realize that AI technology is not your competition; it’s your fast route to innovation. Pattern AI complements your existing solution by analyzing your GPS data and returning the insights either within your current products or via a dedicated dashboard.

To get started you share your data via a simple API connection such as an existing telematics device, connected car, dashcam, or via a smartphone app. And, with just 1km of driving data, the pattern AI can start to determine the outcome of a trip.

Potential benefits of adding pattern AI to your telematics solution

For you, there are many potential benefits of optimizing your solution with pattern AI. You can upsell your products, create products that meet the changing needs of your customers and be at the forefront of the risk and climate impact management space for transport. And, of course, delivering on your customers’ needs helps to ensure retention and loyalty in the future.

Another consideration relates to insurance. Fleet customers have expensive insurance, but with AI-driven insights it’s possible to help them access more accurate premiums, based on their actual risk level. Here, there are potential partnership opportunities for you with commercial insurers, opening up further doors to add value to your customers.
