At Greater Than we are committed to helping ensure a future of sustainable mobility. That’s why, to coincide with Earth Day 2024 on April 22, we’re highlighting the fact that making drivers more aware of their actions can make a significant difference to climate impact.

What is Earth Day?

Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Growing out of the first Earth Day in 1970, earthday.org is the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement, working with more than 150,000 partners in over 192 countries to drive positive action for our planet.

Why does driver impact matter to the future of the planet?

Close to a quarter of energy-related global greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation. Driving therefore plays a significant role in climate impact. But we can all act to make transport more sustainable.

In fact, amid the evolving landscape of ESG reporting, organizations are expected to measure, act, and report on their environmental impact. This not only helps to protect the future of the planet but increases transparency and accountability relating to business activities.

Doing the right thing is good for business

Prioritizing sustainable mobility is not only good for the planet; it’s good for business too. Benefits include cost savings, competitive advantage, opportunities for innovation, opportunities to attract new customers and investors, and brand awareness.

Paying more attention to sustainable driving can also positively influence employees. This could result in increases in well-being, loyalty, and job satisfaction.

Acting to reduce the environmental impact of mobility

It can be difficult to know where to start to achieve sustainable mobility. For companies based around or reliant on transportation, it’s unlikely to be an option to reduce miles driven without making business sacrifices.

But, you can make a big difference just by increasing drivers’ awareness of the way the drive. In fact, our research has shown that when companies use technology to engage their drivers in a sustainable mobility program, they see average CO2 reductions of 20%.

There are many techniques that can be adopted by drivers to reduce their climate impact.

These include:

  • Being 100% focused (no distractions)
  • Looking well ahead and being prepared for upcoming events
  • Keeping a safe distance from the cars in front
  • Avoiding stress behind the wheel
  • Handling the vehicle smoothly
  • Adapting their driving to the traffic and weather conditions

An effective sustainable mobility program identifies the behaviors negatively influencing driver climate impact AND pinpoints areas for improvement.

Simply making drivers aware of their actions, and the way this influences climate impact, can be a pivotal starting point for big change.
