Working towards Net Zero

Equans BeLux is firmly focused on energy transition and sustainable mobility. Alongside progressively electrifying its fleet, the company obtained its Level 5 CO₂ Performance Ladder certification earlier this year.

Equans BeLux has also launched awareness campaigns promoting responsible driving behavior. To further advance its sustainability goals, the company decided to introduce a new internal initiative: a challenge for employees to adopt more responsible driving habits and collectively reduce CO₂ emissions.

Driving engagement through AI

Equans BeLux identified Greater Than as the AI technology provider that could bring its challenge to life. Greater Than provided a driver app that could be easily downloaded by employees and connected to their cars via Bluetooth.

The internal eco-driving initiative was launched as a “Summer Driving Challenge” on July 1, 2025, running for three months. A total of 188 employees took part, representing 18,700 analyzed trips and 438,000 km driven.

Sustainability, safety, and innovation are guiding principles in everything we do. While electrifying our fleet is a key priority, changing driving behavior is equally crucial. Eco-driving techniques not only reduce fuel or electricity consumption but also enhance road safety. We were delighted to partner with a technology provider that helped us use gamification to turn our environmental goals into a motivating challenge for our employees.

Motivating drivers to adopt sustainable behaviors

Throughout the challenge, participants could track their performance in the driver app. The app provided a score reflecting both the safety and climate efficiency of their driving.

Employees also received personalized tips for improvement, allowing them to compare progress over time and see how their performance ranked against colleagues.

All of this was achieved with full respect for personal data, ensuring complete privacy. The result was an innovative, gamified solution that inspired employees to adopt safer, more eco-conscious driving habits.

Achieving positive results

By the end of the challenge, participating drivers achieved an overall 7% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to the average driver.

In absolute terms, this translated to a total reduction of approximately 5,500 kg CO₂, equivalent to planting 250 trees.

Beyond the numbers, the initiative delivered additional benefits:

  • Improved driver awareness of the importance of safe, sustainable driving behaviors
  • Increased employee engagement, driven by friendly competition and a shared goal
  • A measurable contribution to fleet sustainability, complementing the company’s existing efforts

We are very proud to have achieved an overall 7% reduction in CO₂ emissions, because of our drivers taking part in this eco-driving challenge. This demonstrates that gamification can be a powerful lever to engage our teams in more sustainable behaviors. The impact is real, measurable, and above all meaningful. It’s a great example of our commitment to a low-carbon future.

The company plans to encourage employees to continue their efforts and inspire other companies to adopt similar approaches.
