FIA: Launching an AI-powered global benchmark for driver risk

Enabling organizations worldwide to measure, compare, and improve road safety with data-driven insights and a universal language to assess driver risk.

About the FIA

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) is the governing body for world motor sport and the federation for mobility organizations globally. It is a non-profit organization committed to driving innovation and championing safety, sustainability and equality across motor sport and mobility.

Founded in 1904, with offices in Paris, London and Geneva, the FIA brings together 245 Member Organizations across five continents, the FIA represents millions of road users, motor sport professionals and volunteers. It develops and enforces regulations for motor sport, including six FIA World Championships, to ensure worldwide competitions are safe and fair for all.

Addressing an urgent global challenge

Around 1.2 million people die on the world’s roads every year. Approximately one-third of these deaths are work-related, with road crashes being the leading cause of fatalities in the workplace.

Despite significant investment in safety, most risk assessment remains reactive, focusing on incidents after they occur, with limited ability to predict crashes before they happen. At the same time, organizations lacked a standardized way to measure driver risk globally across vehicles, systems, regions and industries. Without a global benchmark, it has also been difficult for them to know what “good” really looks like.

The missing component:
FIA Driver Safety Index

To address this gap, the FIA partnered with Greater Than to develop the FIA Driver Safety Index (FIA DSI), establishing a universal language for driver risk.

Delivered by the FIA as a neutral third party, the FIA DSI provides an independent and trusted benchmark for safety performance, enabling organizations to assess and benchmark driver risk consistently – regardless of vehicle type, data source or geography.

The FIA DSI enables organizations to move from reactive to proactive driver safety management, while accelerating global road safety progress. The Index also strengthens organizations’ ability to demonstrate and report their impact on road safety and society, in line with increasing ESG expectations.

For the first time, organizations can measure and compare driver risk in a universal language. Along with our other programs, it gives them the means to act confidently to reduce road crashes, injuries, and fatalities. The FIA Driver Safety Index also supports our Members in building meaningful partnerships and strengthens their ability to demonstrate leadership in road safety, both nationally and globally.

A complement to existing solutions

Rather than replacing existing systems, the FIA DSI works alongside existing solutions to harmonize data from multiple sources and turn fragmented data into a single, comparable  and actionable view of driver risk.

As part of the FIA’s broader road safety commitment, including initiatives such as the FIA Road Safety Index and FIA Smart Driving Challenge, the FIA DSI represents a major step towards safer mobility. Through its global network of Member Organizations, the FIA is uniquely positioned to scale the benefits of the FIA DSI worldwide.

AI-powered global benchmark

Greater Than’s AI technology powers the FIA DSI by converting GPS driving data into universally comparable index scores.

Trained on over 20 years of real-world driving data, the AI identifies behavioral patterns linked to crash risk and translates them into predictive crash probability insights.

By isolating driver behavior from external factors, the FIA DSI enables organizations to compare safety performance across all vehicles, industries and geographies, creating a truly global benchmark for driver risk. This global benchmark sets a new standard for how road safety is measured and managed.

Engaging organizations across the public and private sectors is key to achieving lasting improvements in road safety. The FIA Driver Safety Index provides a consistent way to understand driver risk, enabling organizations to take informed, coordinated and targeted action to drive meaningful change at scale.

From everyday driving data to actionable insights

Organizations subscribing to the FIA DSI can generate their own Index – an anonymized, aggregated view of risk which they can use to:

  • Monitor and improve driver performance internally
  • Identify risk trends and priority intervention areas
  • Benchmark performance against relevant benchmarks
  • Report progress for ESG compliance

Companies can share data from any existing source, including telematics solutions, connected vehicles, mobile apps or other devices. Alternatively, data can be shared through the FIA Smart Driving Challenge app, also powered by Greater Than’s AI.
