This collaboration brought together Smart Eye’s cutting-edge DMS technology with Greater Than’s globally unique risk intelligence to examine the relationship between driver eye movements, Advanced Driver Distraction Warning (ADDW) alerts, and crash probability.
Our work with Greater Than provides valuable real-world insights into how drivers respond to distraction alerts and how those alerts influence crash risk. With a deeper understanding, we can refine our systems to make alerts more effective. These findings help us take in-car safety technology further, making it better equipped to prevent accidents.

Helping to refine technology for safer outcomes
Starting July 7, 2026, all new vehicles in the EU must include ADDW systems that detect eye movement and alert distracted drivers.
Smart Eye and Greater Than joined forces to go beyond compliance, aiming to elevate the safety potential of these systems. Using Smart Eye’s AIS system – a full driver support solution tailored for small-volume OEMs and fleet vehicles – to detect fatigue and distraction, the project gathered real-world behavior data and merged it with Greater Than’s predictive crash analytics. The goal: refine ADDW tech and maximize its impact on crash prevention.
Analyzing the impact of driver alerts on risk level
Over four weeks, Greater Than collected and analyzed driving data from professional fleet drivers using vehicles equipped with Smart Eye’s AIS system. Its AI-powered crash probability scoring assessed how alerts influenced crash risk in real time.
Key findings:
- ~10% average crash risk reduction immediately following an ADDW alert
- Crash risk generally returned to pre-alert level after two minutes
- Drowsy driving alerts typically had the greatest impact on crash risk
Tapping into new opportunities
The new insights empowered Smart Eye to evaluate the effectiveness of existing alerts, uncovering opportunities for alert optimization, such as frequency, type, and volume.
The research also supports the future development of new alerts targeting cognitive distraction, stress, and other high-risk behaviors. This analysis will help to advance the adaptiveness and effectiveness of important, lifesaving in-vehicle technologies.
We’ve worked closely with Greater Than to connect two layers of driver insight – what’s happening in the moment, and what it means for overall risk. That combination gives fleet operators a sharper tool for preventing incidents before they happen. Greater Than’s risk intelligence adds more depth to the data and helps fleets focus their efforts where the underlying risk is actually building.

In an expansion of the partnership, Greater Than’s AI risk intelligence was embedded into Smart Eye’s updated AIS system, an aftermarket solution for commercial vehicles.
Now, Smart Eye customers can access real-time crash probability scoring that quantifies driver risk across entire trips, not just at the moment of an alert. This unlocks new capabilities in predicting and preventing crashes before they happen.
